Paryushan

Paryushana or Pajushan is one of the most important festivals of Jain Religion. It can also be referred to as Das Lakshana by Digambaras which is the other branch of Jainism.  Paryushana is the time when the jains take vows and fast with spiritual intensity. The duration of Paryushana is 8 days as per Shwetambaras and 10 days as per Digambaras.

During this time, Jains take part in religious rituals, perform meditations and prayers, fast as many days as possible and also refrain from surrounding themselves with most of the world pleasures. Jain Monks usually take temporary residence during monsoon period of 4 months normaly called as Chaturmas and do not perform their usual wanderings.

This is the time of the year when Jains also request for forgiveness for any mistakes they may have committed knowingly or unknowingly. They seek forgiveness from from almighty as well as from individual human beings by saying Michchami Dukkadam. This is usually said on the last day of Paryushan or Samvatsari.

On the 5th day of Paryushan, Jains celebrate the birth of Mahavir Bhagwan by performing Janma Vaanchan. In Gujarati Calendar it comes on Besto Mahino or Bhadarvo Sud Ekam. Usually, Mahavir Jayanti falls in the month of April, However it is celebrated during Paryushan mainly because of festival mood.
